colin doerr 

Colin Doerr is a Vancouver-based ceramic artist whose practice bridges material tradition, cultural history, and contemporary inquiry. He studied clay and ceramics at the Kootenay School of the Arts, where he developed a strong foundation in ceramic form, craftsmanship, and design. His work draws on both functional and architectural traditions, with a particular interest in historical forms and the cultural meanings embedded within them.

His artistic practice is informed by extensive academic study, including a Master of Education at Simon Fraser University and doctoral studies at the University of British Columbia.

 

He also pursued Chinese language and cultural studies at the Beijing Language and Culture University, an experience that continues to shape his engagement with traditional Chinese art, architecture, and craft.

Colin’s longstanding professional career in international education and cross-cultural partnership development further informs his approach, situating his work within a broader context of global exchange and dialogue.

 

Colin volunteers as a docent at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, where he shares his knowledge of Chinese history, culture, and classical garden design with visitors. This role deepens his connection to Chinese material culture and directly informs his ongoing research into traditional ceramic forms, including architectural elements such as roof and drip tiles.

Through his ceramics, Colin brings together scholarship, craft, and cultural interpretation, creating work that reflects both historical continuity and contemporary exploration.
